Free to Inspire Award presented to Karen Onken ![]() The Free to Inspire Award honors a volunteer who is an inspiration to the Free Arts family. This award recognizes a new volunteer who displays outstanding enthusiasm and dedication to Free Arts programs. “I think kids are really cool, and I couldn't live without art. It is purely selfish I suppose – I feel so happy when I am involved with the kids… The idea that I can be an integral part of their lives, perhaps showing them an outlet for frustrations and fears – something they can turn to or discover. I feel it a privilege to be with them.” It is the privilege of Free Arts to have Karen Onken join us as a volunteer. Even though she has only started volunteering with Free Arts in late 2008, she has definitely been an inspiration to the Free Arts family. Within this past year, Karen has been a Weekly Mentor, volunteered at numerous Free Arts Days, and the Palette of Homes Tour. Karen’s energy and enthusiasm is fueled by her desire to bring joy to the children. When asked about her favorite recollections, Karen rattles off multiple memories. “Walking into the room where the kids were and they all stood, cheered and clapped wildly when we entered. The look on their faces was like a kid in a candy store!! What a wonderful feeling.” “After the pumpkin festival my little buddy told that this was the ‘most fun day’ and then was ecstatic that she could have a tuna fish sandwich.” “Another was when a tiny boy who rarely spoke or worked a project, slipped his hand into mine without saying a word… Sorry, I have so many moments – I am always finding the good, and there is so much good with Free Arts leading the way.” Congratulations, Karen! Thank you for your optimism, grace and enthusiasm. Photo: Karen Onken volunteers at the recent Free Arts Day, Play Time. |
