Free Arts of Arizona depends on the love and commitment of community volunteers to provide the healing effects of the creative arts directly to children in need. Free Arts volunteers are positive role models who encourage appropriate social interaction, assist in developing a renewed sense of self worth, build trust and create a non-judgmental environment to encourage the expression of emotions.
Volunteers do not have to be artists! All volunteers who wish to work with children will complete a screening and training process, and are invited to attend an orientation session to learn more about our opportunities. Volunteers need to be age 16 or older.
Volunteer Orientations are held at the Free Arts office located at 103 West Highland Avenue, Suite 200, Phoenix 85013. Highland is just south of Camelback Road; our office is a 2-story red brick building on Highland just one block west of Central Avenue.
1. Attend an orientation to decide if our programs are right for you.
2. Complete a volunteer application and return it to the Free Arts office.
3. Distribute three reference forms and ask your references to mail, email or fax them directly to the Free Arts office.
4. Complete a one-on-one interview with the Free Arts program staff.
5. Free Arts staff will fingerprint you and submit the prints for a background check. We require the state-issued fingerprint clearance card.
6. Attend 101 Volunteer Training.
7. If placed in the Weekly Mentor Program, complete any other screening items deemed necessary by our partner facilities, such as TB testing, immunization updates, etc.
8. Learn about upcoming opportunities in our volunteer newsletter. Attend ongoing art workshops and special training sessions offered through Free Arts.
Free Arts does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religious beliefs, age, sex, handicap or sexual orientation. While the program is nondiscriminatory, the preferences of the residential facility are respected in the selection of the appropriate volunteer. All volunteers will be selected at the discretion of Free Arts and the residential facility management.
