Spotlight with Emma Wing, Volunteer Mentor

What is your favorite Free Arts Moment?

My favorite event I have attended was probably also its most impactful. I am so grateful to have been able to be a part of the ACASI Vigil [Arizona Child and Adolescent Survivor Initiative, a program of ASU]. This was an event where members of the community came together to memorialize those that had been lost, specifically those who died as the result of domestic violence or other crimes.

It was a very heavy experience. I got to help the participants do an art activity. The art activity involved decorating a locket, then writing a note to their loved one and placing it inside the locket. At the end, they all put their lockets on and got to wear them home. The kids really enjoyed it, and even though it was so heavy, it made me happy to see the activity put a smile on their faces. That was a great example of seeing how art heals.

What connected you with Free Arts?

In 2022 my company had a volunteer day and I selected Free Arts, because I love the arts. We had a great time together as we made affirmation cards for the participants of Free Arts’ programs. A member of the Free Arts staff spoke about their mission and it really resonated with me. I signed up for more information about becoming a mentor, I did the orientation process, and I’ve been a volunteer/mentor ever since!

What would you tell a prospective volunteer mentor?

I have volunteered with other organizations in the past, and Free Arts is the best in terms of being organized and making effective use of my time. I always know exactly what I will be doing when I show up. Everyone is so inclusive and friendly. I always feel like I can express myself…it is a very safe environment in that way. It’s so great to get exposure to populations that I haven’t known before and to know the impact I am making. And when I show up, it’s great to get to know the other volunteers. There are always familiar faces when I do Free Arts Days.

Anything else we should know?

What I love about Free Arts is that I can pick and choose what events I want to help out at. People should know that your schedule can be accommodated. I also feel that the communication and coordination from the program coordinators is top notch…they are so well organized. I feel like my time and contributions are valued and respected. That means so much to me!
