On September 14, 2025, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts was buzzing with excitement—a lively mix of artists, participants, parents, Free Arts staff, volunteers, board members, and members of the general public. The event was a prime example of what the arts do better than anything else—to bring people from all walks of life together for a shared experience.
The centerpiece of the day was a performance of Peter Pan, directed and choreographed by Susan “Susie” Silverman, the longtime director of Dance Theater West. Led by her core dancers—a very talented and committed ensemble of high school students—the cast was rounded out by nearly two dozen Free Arts participants. The Free Arts participants worked with Susie and her dancers to learn about dance and movement, culminating in their boisterous performance as the “Lost Boys” of Peter Pan. The audience was captivated and moved by the performance.
The lobby was also brimming with activity, both before and after the show. Free Arts Professional Artist Series artists worked with participants over several weeks, culminating in a special exhibition. These included:
- Denise Garcia: visual art and mask making
- Shelly Love: photography
- Joseph “DJ Dimension” Mercado: DJ’ing and sound mixing
- Steve Price: creative writing
Visitors got to experience what our participants had worked on over the previous weeks, while mixing and mingling with the artists during a reception.
Lastly, we rounded out the day with a Free Arts Day activity, complete with treasure chests (for holding hopes and dreams for safekeeping) and fairy wands, in keeping with the Peter Pan theme.
We extend a hearty thanks to the artists, participants, and supporters for making such a fun and multifaceted day possible. We can’t wait until next year’s Storybook Ballet!
Special thanks to Tolga Tuncay, photographer.
