One Saturday in June, children from four Valley group homes were treated to a musical extravaganza in the bright welcoming atmosphere of CREATE space at Arizona Science Center®. Free Arts, CREATE, The Phoenix Symphony, and Frank Thomas from AZ Rhythm Connection teamed up to craft percussion, string, and woodwind instruments. Because of The CREATE space’s generous donation of supplies each child was able to craft

  • Adufe (drum)- created using a square wood frame cheap packing tape and rubber bands.
  • Bugle (horn)- created using Extension hose, duct tape and 3D printed mouth pieces made by CREATE staff!!
  • String instrument- created using PVC pipe, string, and cardboard

Because the goal of CREATE is to provide “a place where science, design, and engineering collide” the children got the opportunity to use power tools, clippers, and their own strength to manufacture their instruments.  And of course our awesome volunteers got in on the action too!

We have another Create partnership happening later this summer. We can’t wait to share the joy of making music with Free Arts children!
